New traffic code for Southern Ute police

DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – A proposed revision to the Southern Ute Indian Tribe traffic code would give tribal police the right to issue tickets to non-Native American drivers.

The tribe’s land is between Bayfield and Durango.

Right now they can only stop drivers, but can’t give citations.

The revisions would let them issue tickets for traffic violations and if you get a ticket you would be required to appear in Southern Ute Tribal Court.
