State land commissioner targets illegal dumping in Lea County

LEA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The state land commissioner is going after illegal dumping in southeastern New Mexico.

Commissioner Aubrey Dunn is targeting caliche pits in oil patches around Lea County.

He says trespassers are dumping trash and dangerous materials into the pits, creating a health hazard and devaluing state trust lands.

In 2017, crews removed more than 550 tons of waste in the Lea County area costing the state more than $00,000.
