Study shows tailgating slows traffic down

(KRQE) – A new study shows tailgaters are defeating their purpose.

Tailgaters may be traveling closely behind you in hopes of speeding up their travel, but the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows it is more likely they are slowing traffic down.

Researchers were inspired to study tailgaters after watching flocks of birds move together.

Their findings suggest controlling the space between cars like the birds do would reduce fluctuations in speed that ultimately cause slow-downs.
