Convicted cop killer pleads guilty to armed robbery-related charges

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The man already serving life in prison for killing Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Benner will spend even more time behind bars.

Andrew Romero pleaded guilty last week to charges stemming from a string of armed robberies in the weeks before Officer Benner’s murder.

Court documents show Romero targeted convenience stores and fast food restaurants all the way up until the officer’s death in May 2015.

Romero faces 21 years in prison when he’s sentenced.

The state Supreme Court is still reviewing Romero’s conviction for killing Officer Benner after he filed an appeal.
