Driver who hit bicyclists sentenced to probation, community service

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A distracted driver who hit and seriously injured two bicyclists will have to preach the dangers of distracted driving as part of his sentence.

Marlin Austin was driving near Coors and Los Padillas in January of 2016 when he veered onto the shoulder and struck 16-year-old Nathan Barkocy and his coach, 55-year-old Stephen Williamson.

Nathan, a Saint Pius student, was training for the tour of the Gila.

Austin was charged with careless driving. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 90 days probation and 150 hours of community service.

That community service will include educating others about the dangers of distracted driving. He must also pay restitution to the victims.
