Police recover body found in Rio Grande

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – A family walking in the Bosque on New Year’s Day reported seeing a body in the Rio Grande.

Search and rescue crews used an airboat and stood in about thigh-high frigid water wearing waders to recover the body near Central Avenue, west of Tingley Beach, according to APD spokesperson Mike Schroader. It is unknown how long the body was in the river.

“Unfortunately, it is very preliminary in the investigation. We have very little to go on at this time,” Schroeder said. “We don’t know the exact circumstances.”

Bicyclists, walkers and others at Tingley for the holiday crowded from a distance to watch the recovery scene starting around 1:20 p.m. Monday. One woman whose family frequents the park said she will now think twice before letting her kids play in the usually busy trail area along the Rio Grande.

“[It’s] scary knowing that we bring our kids over here,” stated Tawana Lee of Albuquerque. “What else could we find if we bring our kids over here?”

Since the investigation is in its early stages, APD would not say the gender or if any foul play was suspected; only that it was an adult’s body.

The Office of the Medical Investigator now has custody of the body.

It took police and rescue crews about two hours to clear the scene while temporarily blocking off the trail along the river.
