State Police investigate fatal crash involving deputy and pedestrian

PLACITAS, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a Sandoval County deputy and a pedestrian.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. near Trail Road West in Placitas.

The initial investigation revealed that Sandoval County Sheriff’s Department deputies were investigating a burglary alarm at a residence on Trail Road West when they received a second call for another residential alarm at a separate location.

As the deputy backed up out of the residence to respond to the second call, he struck a pedestrian and inadvertently drove over her with the vehicle’s right tire.

The pedestrian, who has been identified as 68-year-old Linda Baragiola, sustained critical injuries.

She was taken to UNMH where she succumbed to her injuries.

Witnesses on scene reported that she was standing behind the deputy’s vehicle and possibly talking on her cell phone when she was struck.
