State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in San Rafael in Cibola County.

State Police said it happened on Friday morning at a home in San Rafael. They got a call from an anonymous tip that a homicide suspect was at the home. That suspect was 59-year-old Hector Gamboa. He was wanted for the murder of his girlfriend earlier this month in Albuquerque. When officers entered the home, the found Gamboa inside.

Police said Gamboa barricaded himself in the home and refused to comply with officers’ commands. Negotiators were brought in to try to talk to Gamboa, but he refused to listen to commands for hours.

At 8:30 p.m., police said an Albuquerque Police officer shot at killed Gamboa. The details of the incident still remain under investigation.
