AFD responds to semi fire on eastbound I-40 near Rio Grande

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- Eastbound I-40 was shut down at Coors for a short time due to a semi fire.

The fire happened just before 7 p.m. Sunday near I-40 and Rio Grande.

AFD says they called on a total of four pumpers, a ladder, a squad, and two Battalion Commanders with help from Bernalillo County crews, to battle the blaze.

The driver of the semi truck says he was hauling used cars to Massachusetts from California when he noticed smoke coming from the back of the truck. When he pulled over to contact a mechanic, he says, the truck went up in flames.

The semi is a total loss as well as three of the vehicles the man was hauling.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
