Authorities: Child’s remains found on Navajo reservation

GANADO, Ariz. (AP) – Authorities say an infant’s remains have been found on the Navajo Nation in Arizona.

The Gallup Independent reports that Navajo Police Chief Phillip Francisco said a child’s severed head was found Monday in a field in the Ganado area.

Francisco told the newspaper the FBI is investigating and he didn’t have additional details.

Francisco’s office says he’s attending the funeral Thursday of a Navajo Nation police officer fatally shot on duty.

The FBI did not immediately respond to queries from the Associated Press but gave the Independent a statement saying “partial remains of an infant child” were found in the Ganado area.

The statement said cause of death wasn’t known but that authorities had information that they hoped would lead to “a rapid resolution to the investigation.”
