Santa Fe officer hit, killed pedestrian in overnight crash

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) –  Investigators say a Santa Fe Police officer hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday night.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department says an officer was driving to book someone into jail at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday when he crashed into 41-year-old Francisco Navarrette, who was crossing at Cerrillos Road near Jorgenson Lane.

Deputies did not cite the officer, and they’re still investigating how fast he was driving.

Other drivers say visibility in that area is bad at night.

“This is a very dark area so you know, it’s hard to see,” said Daniel Waterman.

“I would think maybe lights, a few more lights here would help,” said Marian Garcia.

Signs in the area warn against crossing because people KRQE News 13 spoke with say it has been a problem spot for cars and pedestrians.

The crash happened right next to Pete’s Place Interfaith Community Shelter, where records show Santa Fe Police saw Navarrette a week earlier.

“Frank had struggled in and out of rehabilitation because he suffered from depression,” said his sister Brenda Navarrette, who lives in El Paso.

However, she said within the last year, around the time he moved to Santa Fe, Navarrette got involved with church.

“He was recently saved. He found himself and the Church of Christ. He gave himself to God,” she said.

Brenda said her brother went to Socorro High School, where he was very involved in the theater program.

She said he also ran track and attended the University of Texas at El Paso.

“Frank was a very giving person with a big heart. He had a lot of ambition,” she said.

Navarrette was an aspiring actor with two teenage daughters.

“I wish he would have had more time to spend more time with his daughters,” she said.

His family in El Paso is trying to raise money to bring his body home for a funeral in Texas. To donate to their GoFundMe, click here. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
