ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man who killed two people in a drunk driving crash was sentenced Friday to three decades behind bars.
Police say Steven Trujillo ran a red light at Rio Bravo and Del Rio in July 2015, crashed into and SUV and killed 30-year-old Mary Soto and a 13-year-old. Trujillo had two prior DWI convictions.
Friday in court, Trujillo apologized to the family, but denied that he was the driver.
“I know it’s a serious crime that happened, but everyone is making it seem like it was me, it was behind the wheel and it wasn’t, I was in the vehicle,” said Trujillo.
Last month, Trujillo pleaded no contest. But Friday, he asked to pull his plea and go to trial.
Since the motion to withdraw had not been submitted, the judge moved on with sentencing.
Victims and family of the victims told the judge since the crash, only pain has followed.
“My daughter had to see my arm hanging off. My daughter had to see her brother dead next to me. I had to see my son like that. I had to see the kids like that,” said Veronica Sandoval.
The judge sentenced Trujillo to 30 years in prison and five years probation.
Trujillo’s attorney’s now has 90 days to submit the motion to withdraw.
A judge will then decide whether to proceed to trial.
