New Mexico man paralyzed after hit-and-run accident

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE)- A New Mexico man is afraid he’ll never walk again after police say another driver ran him off the road and then vanished.

It was a day four months ago that would turn Xavier Soto’s world upside down.

“I would ask questions like, ‘am I gonna be okay?’ and ‘what’s gonna happen to me?’ and they explained to me that I probably wouldn’t walk again,” said Soto.

He was heading from Alamogordo to El Paso to meet up with his buddies, when he says he was run off the road by a white Chrysler.

“The car just flipped and I hit a mesquite bush and that’s where they think I hit my head and broke my spine,” he said.

New Mexico State Police responded to the crash, but still haven’t found the driver of the other car.

Soto was left paralyzed from the chest down. He’s gained limited use of his arms.

He’s staying at an assisted living facility for the time being and also relies on help from his girlfriend.

“A lot of it has to do with think and hoping that I get better and stuff, and just having the right people in my life, that’s what keeps me going,” said Soto.

She created a GoFundMe account to raise money for a surgery in China that could help Xavier walk again.

While he tries to remain optimistic, he hopes that his story will serve as a reminder to those on the road.

“I just hope people just learn how to drive a little better and if they see someone in a car accident, stop by and help them out,” he said.

Witnesses say they tried to get the license plate of the driver, but he sped off too quickly. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
