SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A pair of deputies from different counties are in the hospital after a bad crash while off-duty. One of those deputies is in the ICU while the other driver who got into the crash with them is dead.

The head-on crash happened Thursday in Santa Fe. In one of the vehicles were two deputies who were also husband and wife.

It happened just before rush hour at the intersection of 599 and Via Veteranos. Santa Fe police say they’re still investigating the cause of the crash, but confirm it involved two vehicles.

Investigators say the driver of one of the cars died at the scene while his passenger was taken to the hospital.

The other vehicle involved was a truck with Taos County Sheriff’s Deputy Ted Garcia and his wife Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Deputy Cindy Garcia.

“I visited with both Ted and Cindy. Cindy is in ICU. Ted had surgery on his arm. He’s doing well considering that his wife is in ICU,” said Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan.

While Santa Fe police haven’t said what happened, the Taos Sheriff on Facebook says the car pulled in front of the deputies’ truck causing the collision.

The Rio Arriba Sheriff says Ted and Cindy Garcia are both outstanding deputies. They’re asking the community to pray for Cindy.

There’s still no word yet on the condition of the passenger who was in the car. Police don’t believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
