Sci-fi thriller being filmed in Roswell

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE)- The city of Roswell has been turned into a giant movie set.

Crews are shooting scenes for the sci-fi thriller “Astro” and the town is buzzing about it. They hope that this will be the first step in building the film-making industry in Roswell.

There is a major effort being made by city officials to build the film and television industry in southeastern New Mexico and to capture some of the projects that often go to Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Donovan Fulkerson  had the vision of bringing the film industry to his hometown of Roswell since he was just a kid — and now it’s happening.

“This feature film that we are shooting here today is the first domino in the process of building a long term infrastructure here,” said Fulkerson.

Fulkerson is one of the producers of the movie. Fulkerson hopes that the film is the first step in growing the industry into southeastern New Mexico.

“The producer/director, has looked long term into helping us and coming in as a partner to help us build, so his connections, my connections, our city, their technology and all of it just blends very, very well,” said Fulkerson.

The sci-fi story is about a billionaire space explorer who discovers life on another planet and brings an alien to Earth.

The cast and crew say working in Roswell has been great.

“It’s been a blessing to be here and be able to film on location and involve the people of the community in the city and the county to do something great,” said Asif Akbar, Director.

The city is thrilled to have them here; Roswell hopes that more film makers will follow in their footsteps.

“Our intent is to try and grow that industry in a sustainable way so that we can have film occurring and post production occurring throughout the year,” said John Mulcahy, President of Roswell’s Economic Development Program.

The director for this movie hopes it will release sometime in fall 2017. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
