City hosts tree lighting to honor children killed in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque is hosting an “Angel Tree Lighting” at Civic Plaza on Thursday at 6 p.m. to celebrate the lives of children lost to violence and abuse.

City Councilor Ken Sanchez said the biker organization, Guardians of the Children, approached him last month about organizing the event.

They are inviting the community to participate.

The City said ornaments in the tree will have the names of young victims to be remembered.

“We can remember these young kids and spread the word that we’re watching, that these things should not be happening in our community,” Councilor Sanchez said.

This event was already being organized when news this week came out of the three children and her mother who were gunned down in their home in Four Hills.

Police say Daniel Wechsler broke into the home and waited for the family to arrive. He then shot his ex-girlfriend, her children and himself.

Police say only the mother lived, and she is still in the hospital with serious injuries. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
