DOT investigating intersection after multiple accidents

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –
It’s a magnet for bad drivers and nasty crashes. Now, neighbors of a busy freeway on-ramp hope something will be done to fix it.

“Bang, smash just like that, almost every single day,” said Jack Smith who works at the Jericho Nursery on Osuna.

People like Smith who work near the intersection of Osuna and Pan American Frontage Road said the sound of destruction has become all too familiar.

“This intersection has become extremely dangerous,” said Rick Hobson, the owner of Jericho Nursery that looks onto the intersection. He said they always hear the wrecks before they see them.

“I dread it, I absolutely dread it,” said Smith. The staff at the nursery said the wrecks happen at the intersection almost daily.

“Yesterday there were two accidents there,” said Smith. He said in the five years he’s worked there, it’s been and issue. “It hasn’t changed, if anything it’s gotten worse.”

The store’s owner said something needs to change.

“It’s all the light, people are running the light, that’s what’s causing the accidents,” said Hobson.

Albuquerque Police said there have been 12 accidents in the last three months, three with injury and nine without.

KRQE News 13’s cameras captured driver after driver turning in front of traffic to get onto the southbound I-25 on ramp instead of waiting for the safety of the green arrow.

“Someone from the City council oughtta come down and take a look at it or traffic safety expert, why is that one of the worst intersections in the City?” said Smith.

The road and the light are actually owned by the Department of Transportation, and they weren’t aware of the concerns until Friday.

“Our traffic team will do an indepth analysis of this intersection,” said Bernadette Bell a spokesperson for DOT.

She said the DOT will look into everything from sight distance, to traffic volume and what causes backup there.

“Once we take a good look at it, we’ll look at the data and determine if this is something that is in our control,” said Belle.

She said if there is anything they can do to improve the safety of the intersection, they will make it happen.

There is no time frame yet in terms of when the study will be complete, the intersection has been placed on a waiting list.
