Chris’ Friday Afternoon Forecast

A cold wind and snow chances are ahead for New Mexico as we head into the weekend!   A cold morning will give way to a very chilly afternoon with canyon winds cranking up out of the east in Albuquerque today.  The metro will feel wind gusts from 40-45 mph this afternoon and evening.  The wind today is thanks to a cold front that will move into eastern New Mexico throughout the day today.  This front in combination with a storm system just to our west will help trigger snow showers today with heavier snow developing across southern New Mexico later tonight into early Saturday morning.  This storm system will move south of New Mexico over the weekend.

The positioning of the low pressure system to our south will bring the best chance for snow will be across southern and eastern New Mexico this weekend.  The snow will be increasing in coverage later this evening into early Saturday morning.  The Sacramento Mountains are under a Winter Storm Warning from 6 pm tonight into Sunday night.   That is where 6-12″ of snow could fall with blowing snow making for tough travel conditions in the Sacramentos.  Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for parts of the Eastern Plains.  Eastern New Mexico could see a rain/snow mix with some freezing drizzle as well.  These types of conditions could make for tough travel in spots on Saturday and Sunday.
