Rio Rancho Rams have eyes on the prize

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The question is can they finish what they started?

The top ranked Rio Rancho Rams will get a chance at completing the perfect season and hoisting the blue trophy in the ranks of Class 6A football Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Rams have to get past 11-1 Las Cruces. The game is a rematch of a state quarterfinal from the 2015 season. The Rams lost that game 55-14.

For the second time in three years, the Rams are undefeated and hosting a final.

“The success that we have had has been great and the same thing with cleveland,” said Rio Rancho head coach Dave Howes. “At the same token those guys have been doing it for a long time so the race is on and we are coming on the back stretch, but we have a ways to go.”

Las Cruces has to go on the road to try to win their first championship since 2013.

The road has been good to first year coach Mark Lopez and his Bulldawgs.

“We have been road warriors all year and I think that our early schedule prepared us for this because we were on the road a ton,” said Lopez. “We were in Albuquerque in the first three of four weeks and our guys know how to travel. It’s a business trip.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover. In order to comment here, you acknowledge you have read and agreed to our Terms of Service.
