Santa Fe Police use Facebook videos to promote safety

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico police department is trying to get creative when it comes to safety tips for the public.

From car burglary prevention tips during the holiday shopping season to checking Halloween candy, videos are popping up on the Santa Fe Police Department’s Facebook to try to engage viewers and bring some humor to the serious business of public safety.

“I think the traditional way we’ve done it before is just kind of a stuffy perspective of an officer in uniform and saying do this and don’t do this,” explained Lt. Michele Williams, Santa Fe Police.

They hoped to reach a younger audience on social media after Marcos Lovato reached out to the department. Lovato and his team are doing the videos for free.

“Money’s never been a factor in this. It started from the heart and seeing opportunity to make a difference in the community,” said Marcos Lovato, founder of “EverWonderMedia.”

Monday’s video was a reminder to lock car doors; the message was from someone who knows firsthand what happens if drivers don’t lock up: an ex-auto burglar.

Police hope through the video, the public will see what thieves see.

The most recent video got 2,000 views since it was posted Monday morning to Facebook.
