Santa Fe police officers to get refresher course on pot laws

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe police officers are being urged to put marijuana possession at the bottom of their priority list. In 2014 the city council approved an ordinance that decimalized possession of one ounce or less of marijuana making it a civil infraction punishable by a $25 fine.

The law has been controversial because it contradicts state law.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican some officers continue to cite people under the state law. Now City Councilor Joseph Maestas is asking the chief to instruct officers to apply the city ordinance.

The chief has said he will provide more training on the city law to his officers. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
