SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – An ex-auto burglar is giving us an inside look into how the crime is committed.
“Take change, take whatever you find in the car. Have a bag with you and fill it up,” said that ex-auto burglar
Santa Fe Police recently interviewed the former self-admitted criminal. He told police auto burglars start with a door check, going from car to car. When an alarm goes off, they run to the next neighborhood and keep doing the same thing.
But criminals aren’t just interested in what’s inside your car, they also want what’s under your hood.
The auto burglar said, “Now a lot of people will battery check you. They are going to pop your hood and take your battery too, you know what I mean?”
Police say the best thing way to protect yourself lock your doors and hide your belongings.
