Personal trainers in Albuquerque see clients increase during holiday season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s probably safe to say a majority of people didn’t hold back on Thursday’s Thanksgiving feast, but for those of you looking to jump right into a workout routine, think again. Personal trainers say it’s more about creating a lifestyle than a diet plan.

Leo Urquides and his clients are already in the gym working off the big Thanksgiving meal just hours after the holiday.

“It’s more of living a lifestyle and continuing to be active year round,” said Urquides.

Making fitness a part of the lifestyle is the key to getting fit and staying fit. He says making it an everyday part of life creates the most success.

“I like to tell people, ‘hey you gotta live the lifestyle, you can’t leave it up to a date or a day.”

Adam Valdez has been training with Urquides for six months and says it’s not always easy keeping up with the lifestyle, but starting small helps him keep going even on those days he’s feeling lazy.

“Setting short term, even weekly goals every week, even if it’s to make it to the gym three days a week, two days a week just to start, it’s always a start.”

Urquides says starting slow and making fitness a part of the lifestyle is the perfect combination for those wanting to start becoming more active. Most importantly, it allows for those much needed cheat days.

“When you have a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, where you’re eating left and right, you don’t feel too bad and have to work yourself out of trouble.”

Urquides will typically see more clients during the colder months because people want to keep active, but stay indoors where it’s warmer. He also says people aren’t only seeking training, but they also want nutrition plans to balance out the holiday meals. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
