ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Thieves are on the loose with a priceless possession stolen from Church of the Ascension.
The Deacons of Church of the Ascensions say everything was normal Wednesday at around 3:00 p.m., but when they arrived this morning for mass, their beloved tabernacle was gone.
“The biggest thing that hurt me, is to know that the tabernacle that they took, inside of that tabernacle for us Catholics, is the bless of sacrament is Jesus himself,” said Deacon Leon Jones.
The tabernacle has been an important part of the church and church goers were quick to notice.
“A lot of them went into tears immediately because it hurt,” said Deacon Jones.
The back door of the church showed damage from the thieves prying it on to get access inside. However, the tabernacle wasn’t the only thing missing, various chalices and bowls were also taken.
The Deacons of the Church of Ascension say they want the thieves to know, the items they took aren’t going to get them very far.
“Everything else they took that they thought was gold, was nothing but gold plate. Everything was gold plate, there was no solid gold at all,” said Deacon William Hoefler.
However, it isn’t about the monetary value of the items that hurts the most, it’s the meaning behind each item. Deacon Jones says he hopes the Thanksgiving holiday will be enough of a reason to bring back the stolen items.
“God forgives you, that’s for sure. But we would like you to return them to us because this is their home,” said Deacon Jones.
This is the first time something like this has happened to the Church of Ascension and police are currently investigating.
