ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE)- It was not a pleasant night in one New Mexico neighborhood. People there woke up at four in the morning to gunshots and then police investigating a murder in a front yard.

People on the block of East Bonney in Roswell have spent the day Wednesday wondering what happened. Neighbors say they heard two gunshots and when they came outside there was a swarm of police cars.

“When officers got there they found a man lying in the front yard of one of the residences, one of the homes, and he was alive at the time but he had multiple injuries,” said Todd Wildermuth, Roswell police spokesman.

According to police, the victim has been identified as Jeremy Ridens. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police aren’t saying if Ridens was shot to death, only that he was involved in a fight and it may have been with more than one person.

They also say Ridens made his way to the yard of another house on the block before collapsing.

Detectives have also identified 19-year-old Estrella Montantez as a person of interest in this case. Investigators believe Montantez may have key information regarding the death of Ridens.

They are asking anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Montantez, or having any other information about this case, to contact the Roswell Police Department or Chaves County Crime Stoppers.

“It is a murder investigation and we would appreciate any help with any information that the public may have,” said Wildermuth.

Neighbors KRQE News 13 talked to say they did not know Ridens, but that they are shocked this happened on their block especially the day before Thanksgiving.

Police do not believe Ridens lived on the block where he was killed. Court records show Ridens does have a criminal history that includes burglary.

Police say it’s too early to say what he was doing in the neighborhood in the middle of the night.
