ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The suspect in a fatal shooting that happened Tuesday is now in custody, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.
APD says a witness who heard shots and saw a man standing over a body in the Wells Park area took pictures of a vehicle that was driving erratically as it left the parking lot of a nearby community center.
Police say the vehicle was a rental car that had been rented by 19-year-old Damian Hidalgo.
Police located Hidalgo who told detectives he had gone to the community center to buy marijuana. Hidalgo says the person who he thought he was meeting to buy the drugs from instead pulled a knife and demanded his wallet.
Hidalgo told police he handed over his wallet and the man began to run off. After that, the 19-year-old told police he went to retrieve a gun, shot the man, walked up to his body and retrieved his wallet back before leaving in the rental car.
Hidalgo has been arrested on an open count of murder. No word yet on the identity of the shooting victim.
