ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As the Thanksgiving meal settles, die-hard shoppers will plot their Black Friday shopping strategies on Thursday, but you may also consider buying for others this holiday season for folks who feel blessed just to have a roof over their head.
Heading Home’s Holiday of Hope 2016 campaign is underway, and the organization wants to make the holidays brighter for clients in three New Mexico counties.
“They have experienced homelessness in the recent past, and so we would like to make sure their children have a good holiday season,” said Dorothee Otero, housing director of Heading Home.
“Sometimes folks decide to sponsor families with their entire wishlist, and sometimes they just give them a few things,” she said.
KRQE News 13 met up with Maribel Pinero and her twin 5-year-old daughters, Sharibel and Claribel. Heading Home helped this family with housing and Christmas last year. The girls were filled with joy.
“They gave me a paper on which I could put their favorite color and their favorite characters, and I did that, and when they got their presents for Christmas, they were so excited to get what they actually wanted,” Maribel said.
“I got left behind, I lost my job, I went homeless, and I was staying with friends,” Maribel explained.
She’s now studying at CNM earning her associates degree and plans to enroll at UNM to study engineering.
“You might be on top, but you never know when you might hit rock bottom,” she said. “God is up there, and he knows the good deeds you do here,” Maribel said.
