Albuquerque Civic Plaza ice rink to open Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a sign of the season, the ice rink is going up at Civic Plaza.

The rink officially opens Saturday with the kickoff of the city’s Winter Fest from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be food trucks, hot cocoa and carolers.

People can try out the rink, it’s only $3 to rent skates.

“Seeing the families from young to old really come out that wouldn’t typically come out on a downtown day or night really enjoying downtown is really heartwarming and fulfilling for a downtown project that continues to be revitalized,” Gilbert Montano, the mayor’s chief of staff, said.

Also Wednesday in Civic Plaza, crews put up the giant, 50-foot Christmas tree. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
