6-year-old Albuquerque boy hands out coat donations he gathered

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A 6-year-old Albuquerque boy is making sure other kids stay warm this holiday season.

KRQE News 13 first told you about Vicente Rivera earlier this month when he decided he wanted to collect winter gear for kids in need after seeing a little boy without a coat one day.

He put a box at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department for people to leave donations and then handed them out Wednesday.

When word of his mission spread, the community stepped up big time — donating bags and bags of beanies, gloves and coats.

Wednesday, Vicente was recognized for his selflessness by the sheriff himself. Sheriff Manny Gonzales then presented Vicente with a certificate as an honorary special deputy.

“That is a great thing to do for someone else, to think of others before yourself,” said Sheriff Gonzales. “We can all learn something from that.”

Even better, Vicente got to ride in a fancy cruiser to deliver them to All Faiths, a children’s’ advocacy center.

The director was taken aback.

“To come in and find we are going to receive this amazing gift of little boy was a great surprise. Makes the holidays easier for us,” said CEO of All Faiths Kirsztina Ford.

Vicente’s older brother says he’s proud.

“The fact that he wanted to start giving kids coats for his drive, I thought was really nice because he took something that he saw and wanted to do something about it,” said Jose Rivera.

All Faiths says they serve about 2,400 children every year. Many who are not only in tough financial times, but are abused.
