Train derailment closes I-40 off ramp, underpass near Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA, N.M. (KRQE) – A train derailment east of Santa Rosa has shut down an exit along I-40.

The State Department of Transportation says the off ramp and underpass at mile marker 284 on I-40 is closed.

Traffic is being detoured at the Cuervo exit 291. The closure is expected to last about 24-26 hours, according to the New Mexico DOT.

According to New Mexico State Police, the train was hauling corn and it appears that one of the train’s wheels broke. The train derailed causing severe damage to the track.

An engineer and a conductor were on board the train when it derailed.

No one was injured in the incident.
