SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE)- The city of Santa Fe says it will no longer go easy on people who owe money to the city.
“I consider this money, that it’s fair to collect this. It’s owed to us and it’s the right thing for the city to do,” said Signe Lindell, City Councilor District One.
With a $15 million deficit, the city of Santa Fe is in talks with a Colorado-based company to begin collecting debt.
The money will come from people with outstanding parking tickets or people who haven’t paid their water bills and ambulance bills.
Lindell has spearheaded the effort.
“To ignore it and to not collect these monies is irresponsible of us,” she explains.
Lindell says $6.9 million could be collected.
She expects the collection company to be professional and not overly aggressive.
