ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Bernalillo County District Attorney says she will deliver an important set of documents to the feds, according to the Albuquerque Journal. They’re claims from the Albuquerque Police Department’s former record custodian, alleging cover-ups in the department.

The accusations come from former Records Custodian Reynaldo Chavez. He filed a whistle blower lawsuit against the city indicating the mayor and APD brass were behind everything.

Chavez claims the department deleted or altered videos in high profile cases. It’s documented in an affidavit filed in the Mary Hawkes shooting and in another case.

Officer Jeremy Dear fatally shot Hawkes in 2014 after police say she stole a truck. Chavez also alleges APD higher ups instructed officers not to mention they had video in their police reports. That is, until they could figure out whether the video might get the department in trouble.

APD fired Chavez.

The city says it questions Chavez’s motives and plans to fight his criminal claims in a statement.
