Officers involved in shooting near Espanola identified

ESPANOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – The officers involved in a shooting near Espanola have been identified as New Mexico State Police continue their investigation.

On Saturday, Espanola police got a call about a stolen car Saturday afternoon. When they found the car they say the driver, Richard Borrego, and the passenger, Candice Montoya, took off leading police on a high speed chase along State Road 503.

Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Officers joined in the pursuit and eventually stopped the car near Chimayo using stop sticks. Police say they opened fire when Borrego rammed several police cars trying to escape.

The officers were identified on Thursday as Anthony Armijo with the Espanola Police Department and Joseph Aquino with the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Department.
