ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A petition has been launched to try to get the murder charges against two former Albuquerque Police Department officers dropped.
Keith Sandy and Dominque Perez are facing second-degree murder charges for the shooting death of homeless camper James Boyd. Their first trial ended in a hung jury and there has not been a decision about whether to retry the two.
Now a change.org petition has been launched to try to convince the new District Attorney Raul Torrez to dismiss the charges. The petition was created by the group Pink Behind the Blue – a group of women dedicated to helping police officers and their families. The petition was started Wednesday and has several hundred signatures.
Soon to be DA Torrez said earlier this week that he would assign the case to a group of independent prosecutors to review and make a recommendation about how to proceed.
A hearing in the case is scheduled for January after he takes office.
