Rio Rancho second graders decorate gingerbread house for charity

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – A group of Rio Rancho Elementary students found a sweet way to give back.

A class of second graders rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty Wednesday morning, putting together a gingerbread house to be auctioned off in the 6th Annual Gingerbread Enchantment event.

The event is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels. Their teacher says she picks a different service project each year to teach her class about getting involved.

“I think the kids really enjoy it, and they learn a lot about helping the community,” said Billie Helean, Second Grade Teacher.

The gingerbread house is one of many being auctioned off, with some being donated by master bakers. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
