State Senator Michael Sanchez considers suing over attack ads

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – State senator Michael Sanchez may soon be taking the group behind the attack ads against him to court.

The television ads featured the mothers of murdered Manzano High School student Jaydon Chavez-Silver and 4-year-old Lilly Garcia, accusing Sanchez of being soft on criminals. The ads were the work of the Republican political committee, “Advance New Mexico Now.”

Sanchez lost in last week’s election after 24 years in the Legislature. Now Sanchez tells the Santa Fe New Mexican, he’s considering filing a lawsuit over the attack ads.

A mailer claimed Sanchez traveled to Hawaii at taxpayer’s expense. Sanchez says that’s a lie, that he’s never even been to Hawaii.

Another ad used the widow of murdered Rio Rancho Officer Gregg Benner. Julie Benner was quoted in the ad saying Sanchez was dismissive when she tried to discuss crime bills with him. Sanchez says he never met her.

Being an attorney, Sanchez knows how difficult it is for a public official to win a lawsuit for libel, but he says bringing a suit agains the group might be the only way to stop liars from influencing elections. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
