ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- Jeremy Fishbein and his Lobos are undefeated at home this season and would like to keep it that way Thursday.
That is when the Lobos will host the Portland Pilots in round one of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. The winner will get 11 seed Washington in round two November 20. The Lobos earned an automatic bid into the tournament by beating FIU Sunday to snag the programs first Conference USA Tournament title.
Seniors Niko Hansen and Chris Wehan combined for three goals in Sunday’s shutout. Hansen scored two of the goals.
The Lobos had a few bumps in the road during the regular season but, appears to be playing some of their best soccer at the right time.
“With all sincerity, man I am just so happy for our guys,” said Lobos head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “It validates how good of a team we are. There’s lots of good teams that don’t get the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament. The best teams don’t always get in. This is a special group.”
The Pilots, like the Lobos, were streaking during a part of the regular season when they won five straight matches. The Lobos were streaking on shutouts when they had four in a row. They had eight for the season. The Lobos are 12-6-2. Portland is 12-5-1.
Thursday’s game has a 7 p.m. start time at the UNM Soccer Complex.
