ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Some may call it a random act of kindness, but a good Samaritan says he’s more than happy to use his free time to volunteer at Mark Twain Elementary to make sure the campus stays clean and runs smoothly.

“Instead of staying at home, and I have lots of time, and I was going to volunteer here at Mark Twain,” said Arthur Armijo, a retired Army veteran.

Armijo has been coming to Mark Twain Elementary everyday, all day, for the last three years.

“A lot of times when you retire, you want to stay home and not contribute, and stay active. That’s what I choose to do,” he said.

It’s because of him, the campus stays in such great condition.

“A lot of people say about our campus is that it’s very clean, spotless if you will, and Arthur’s a big reason for that,” said Mandi Walker, the Principal at Mark Twain Elementary.

A common sight for students and staff is seeing Armijo walking around campus with his cart of supplies. To him, there’s not much of a reason as to why he dedicates his free time to Mark Twain.

“I want to do what I want to do and I choose to volunteer here at Mark Twain Elementary,” he said.

It’s a good deed that doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Right around this time of year, since the seasons are changing there’s a lot of leaves, and there’s also some plants that he’s been pulling up and he’ll start replacing those again in the spring. Just kind of, our Mark Twain gardener,” said Walker.

Even though he doesn’t have any children of his own, he can’t help but think he’s helping shape America’s future.

“These children are going to be running this country, and so you’re looking at some of our future leaders here.”

Another plus to doing all of the grunt work? It helps him stay in great shape.
