7.8 magnitude quake hits New Zealand, prompts tsunami warning

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (KRQE) – Authorities on New Zealand’s South Island are telling its residents along the eastern coast to move to higher ground as a powerful earthquake has already prompted big waves.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck just after midnight Sunday near the city of Christchurch.

Photos from a grocery store there already show some minor damage. No major damage has been reported.
