ESPANOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – More New Mexico guns are soon to be transformed into tools for an entirely different purpose.
It’s all part of the “Guns to Gardens” buyback campaign put on by “New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence” and held in Espanola.
Community members were invited to turn over firearms to law enforcement, no questions asked.
Organizers say it’s the ideal way to make sure unwanted guns no longer pose a danger.
“Rather than to sell them to somebody else on the street or give them to somebody, or them getting into the wrong hands, they bring them to us so that we can dispose of them,” said Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan.
But those guns aren’t just being destroyed. Some will become gardening tools thanks to the company “raw tools.”
Others are headed to Santa Fe Community College to be turned into art.
