University of New Mexico honors former student killed in Afghanistan

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – UNM also celebrated Veterans Day by honoring a former student killed in the line of duty.

Staff Sgt. Matthew McClintock was added to the Memorial Wall this morning on the University of New Mexico campus.

McClintock was serving with the Washington State National Guard when he died during a firefight in Afghanistan. He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for his actions.

McClintock’s family says Veterans Day gives them the chance to remember not just his sacrifice but sacrifices made by all veterans.

“We remember him every day but it makes us think a little deeper now on a day like this. Not just Matt but all the soldiers who have died and are still with us,” said Kevin Williams, Matthew’s brother.

Staff Sgt.Matthew McClintock was 30-years-old. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
