Senior center honors veterans at memorial garden

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Veterans Day is Friday but some are already honoring those who have served.

A ceremony was held Thursday at the Barelas Senior Center in the Veterans Memorial Star Garden.

The garden consists of a 16-foot Memorial Star outlined in 50 white ceramic tiles, representing the 50 states. A “Path of Honor” leads up to the star and is lined with flowers honoring veterans and their families.

“People recognize it’s not what we grow in the garden. And people ask me ‘What do you grow in the garden?’ I say ‘My job is to grow people.’ And that’s what I recognize and that’s what makes this possible,” said Patrick Turrieta, garden keeper.
