Police: Pecos woman was not texting before fatal crash

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – Police now say a Pecos woman charged with fatally hitting a motorcyclist with her car was not texting before the crash.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that 23-year-old Megan Carrillo initially told police that she was texting on her cellphone just before the Aug. 7 crash.

However, Santa Fe police say in reports released Tuesday that a review of Carrillo’s phone records confirmed she wasn’t talking or texting on her phone before the crash.

According to the documents, Carrillo says she was confused by an intersection where the traffic lights were out.

Authorities say Carrillo’s SUV slammed into 39-year-old Jerry Hicks, who was on a motorcycle.

Hicks died at a hospital later that night.

Carrillo is scheduled to be indicted Dec. 7 on three charges including vehicular homicide.
