SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – Authorities say a Pecos woman was texting when she fatally hit a motorcyclist with her car.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that 23-year-old Megan Carrillo was indicted late last week for vehicular homicide in the death of 39-year-old Jerry Hicks. Carrillo was also charged with reckless driving and careless driving.
She could face up to three years in prison.
Police say Hicks was stopped at an intersection with non-working traffic lights Aug. 7 when Carrillo’s SUV slammed into him.
Hick’s wife and 18-year-old daughter were in a separate car and witnessed the accident.
He died at a hospital that night.
According to a search warrant, Carrillo told investigators she was texting on her cellphone just before the crash.
She declined comment when reached by phone Monday.
