ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Senate Republicans have been trying to take down Democratic leader Michael Sanchez.
A pro-Republican super pack led by the governor aired attack ads to get their point across.
The ad against the senate majority floor leader shows the mothers of Jaydon Chavez Silver and Lilly Garcia accusing Sanchez of “cradling criminals.”
The ad makers say the goal was to make people vote against current leaders by blaming them for the murders of New Mexico children.
But Sanchez wasn’t the only target. Attack ads against House Republican Sarah Maestas Barnes were also released after a report stated she violated campaign finance laws. She was later cleared.
Two of the main fighters in getting Sanchez out of office were watching as it happened Tuesday night. The mothers of Jaydon and Lilly were together while the results rolled in.
Chavez Silver was a Monzano High School student killed in a drive-by shooting.
Lilly Garcia was shot during a road rage incident.
The mothers said Tuesday night was about fighting for their babies.
“The first time we met him was during legislative session, and it was so fresh. It was just a few months into losing our babies and we just wanted them to listen to us. We wanted them to know we experienced a loss that a lot of people never have to live through. Sorry, but it was really hard. We fought for a babies and we won,” said Nicole Chavez-Lucero, Jaydon’s mom.
