Officials: New Mexico’s election system is safe, secure

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For weeks, portions of Donald Trump’s speeches have included accusations of “election rigging,” but the state’s Secretary of State Office says voters can go to the polls confident that New Mexico’s election is safe and secure.

New Mexico’s election system is paper-based. State Elections Director Kari Fresquez says that means her office can always go back to the paper ballot and recount it if needed. Fresquez also points out that there are numerous checks on the voting system both before and after the election.

“We are checking that every person that voted, and every ballot that is cast…there’s a rigorous check and balance at the county and state level to ensure every vote has been counted before the results become official,” said Fresquez.

Fresquez says her office has no evidence of a high number of people trying to trick the system. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
