State soccer quarterfinals fill up the Wednesday calendar

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The quest for the four peat in Class 5A continues for the St. Pius Sartan girls soccer team.

The three-time defending champion and top seed was pushed to the limit by the Los Lunas Tigers in quarterfinals play Wednesday. The game was not settled in regulation. The Sartans won in a 4-3 shootout.

They will meet the 4-seed Los Alamos in the semifinals Friday. Farmington and Academy are on the other side of the bracket.

In Class 6A girls play La Cueva has advanced to the semifinals after a tough struggle against Sandia. They will face rival Eldorado in the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m. Rio Rancho will meet Cibola on the other side of the bracket.

The Rams surprised the Cleveland Storm 4 to nothing to move into the semi’s. In the ranks of A-4A girls, top seed Sandia Prep put up eight goals while shutting out Las Vegas Robertson.

Prep will now face the 5-seed Bosque in the semifinals Friday. Bosque rolled socorro 5-1 in a quarterfinal clash.

St. Michael’s and Hope Christian will meet on the other side of the semifinals bracket. On the boys side of the action the La Cueva Bears handled their business in Class 6A. Joseph Keller used a perfectly timed header for a goal to lead the Bears to a 1-0 victory over Gadsden.

The Bears will play Sandia in the semifinals Friday at 3:30pm. Volcano Vista and defending 6A champion Albuquerque High will battle on the other side of the bracket. The Academy Chargers advanced to the 5A semifinals with strong play from superstar Charles Touche. Academy beat Alamogordo 4-1, setting up a meeting with five seed Los Alamos at 10:30am Friday.

Santa Teresa and St. Pius are on the other side of the bracket. Class A-4A top seed Hope managed to stay alive. The Huskies put 4 goals on the board in a shutout of East Mountain, setting up a semifinal meeting with defending champion Bosque. That game has a 1pm start Friday.
