City of Albuquerque preps for winter road maintenance

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The city of Albuquerque is prepping for winter with a practice-run for the road maintenance crew.

Wednesday morning the Department of Municipal Development conducted a ride-along for the crews who clear the roads during winter storms.

It was a chance to test the equipment, train new employees and identify any issues along the routes.

The department says it’s important to have everything in order before a storm hits.

“We just have our crews on standby ready to go when the snow starts to fall, we make sure there are people out there monitoring,” said Melissa Lozoya with Department of Municipal Development.

The department has 90 crew members and 50 trucks for plowing snow and laying down salt cinder.

Last year, it responded to 17 storms. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
