ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – He was trying to do his job when he was punched in the face. KRQE News 13 shows you the attack on a city bus driver.
ABQ Ride said these types of confrontations only happen a handful of times per year, but said even one time is too many.
Albuquerque city bus drivers come across hundreds of passengers every single day.
“People seem to be respectful for the most part,” said Rick De Reyes, ABQ Ride Spokesperson.
But this wasn’t the case on Tuesday morning.
“It’s entirely unfair and it’s criminal,” said De Reyes.
A city bus driver was attacked while driving the Menaul route, and it was all caught on the bus’ camera.
A man is waiting at a bus stop near the corner of Menaul and Wyoming, and as the doors open and he steps on, the bus driver comments on the man’s card.
“Look at the condition that things in,” said the bus driver.
Then the driver covers the card reader. That’s when things escalate.
“There’s nothing f***ing wrong with the f****ing card man,” said the passenger.
“Step out, we don’t need to hear of language here,” said the bus driver.
As shown in the video, a few seconds later the man swings towards the drivers face.
The man can be seen walking off behind the jiffy lube building. The bus driver calls dispatch immediately.
“Just got punched hard in the face,” said the bus driver.
The city said that’s exactly what drivers are trained to do after any confrontation.
“To just stop and call dispatch and have police meet them,” said De Reyes.
By the time police arrived at the scene, the man in the gray sweater was long gone. Now the city is asking for the public’s help to identify this passenger.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said De Reyes.
The driver was checked out and is okay. He returned to work the next morning.
If you recognize this man or have any information call the Albuquerque Police Department
