Rio Rancho police unveil memorial to officer killed on duty (KRQE.com)

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Rio Rancho police are remembering one of their own. Officer Anthony Haase died in the line of duty two years ago in a car crash.

Officer Haase died in a crash on his way to a domestic violence call. The call came in early in the morning stating man was reportedly threatening family members with a gun. Haase’s police cruiser went off the road and hit a ditch.

He was just 24 years old. He left behind a wife, parents and siblings.

Dozens of law enforcement officers, family and friends attended the dedication to remember Officer Hasse where a new roadside memorial just north of Iris and Idalia Circle was unveiled Wednesday.

Officer Hasse was part of Rio Rancho High School’s state championship team. He also went on to play in the minors after being drafted by the Texas Rangers.

His former baseball pitching coach and Rio Rancho City Councilor David Bency shared memories from Hasse’s time as a pitcher at Rio Rancho High School.

Hasse served as a Rio Rancho police officer for a little more than a year.
